MOUNT BENSON – 15 November 2011: Cape Jaffa Wines has again been named the Limestone Coast recipient of the Advantage SA regional award for sustainability, it’s the third time Cape Jaffa has won this award in as many years. On the night Cape Jaffa was also announced a 2011 Telstra Hall of Fame inductee in recognition for having won three regional awards.

The Advantage SA regional awards celebrate and showcase the achievements of individuals, groups and businesses in regional South Australia that have contributed towards development and pride in their community. The Hames Sharley Sustainability Award aims to recognise the outstanding achievements of regional South Australians for their adoption of sustainable measures and minimising their environmental footprint. Cape Jaffa’s win is a direct result of the winery’s implementation of further sustainable practices in the management of its biodynamic vineyard and winery complex.

“It’s great to be recognised again as a leader in sustainability within the region,” says Derek Hooper, director of Cape Jaffa Wines. “We’ve concentrated this year on not only minimising the environmental impact that our business activities have in the region, but looking to ways we can give back to the local community.”

Cape Jaffa’s sustainable initiatives for 2011 include advancements with its renewable energy system and the completion of Freshcare environmental winery training.  This training which was completed by Anna Hooper is the first step towards becoming an Entwine member which would allow Cape Jaffa to obtain formal certification for our environmental practices according to recognised standards.  Cape Jaffa also continued its efforts to engage the local community by hosting National Schools Tree Day at the winery.

“Being biodynamic for more than a decade has proven to us that you can build a strong and healthy vineyard through natural management,” says Derek Hooper. “We are committed to extending this approach to how we manage our environment and resources to create a legacy for future generations to aspire to.”

The much-coveted pear trophies handcrafted by the Jam Factory Adelaide are now viewable at Cape Jaffa’s cellar door.
