Jaffa gets second bite of the Advantage SA pear
Cape Jaffa Wines picks up Limestone Coast sustainability award for the second year running at the Advantage SA 11th Annual Regional Awards
MOUNT BENSON – 8 November 2010: Mount Benson’s founding winery and first fully certified biodynamic winegrower on the Limestone Coast Cape Jaffa Wines (www.capejaffawines.com.au) has been the recipient of this year’s Advantage SA regional award for sustainability on the Limestone Coast, its second time to win the award in as many years.
The Advantage SA regional awards, an evolution of the SA Great awards, celebrate and showcase the achievements of individuals, groups and businesses in regional South Australia that have contributed towards development and pride in their community. Cape Jaffa’s back-to-back win is a direct result of the winery’s implementation of further sustainable practices in the management of its biodynamic vineyard and winery complex.
“It’s great to be recognised again as a leader in sustainability within the region,” says Derek Hooper, director of Cape Jaffa Wines. “We’ve concentrated this year on not only minimising the environmental impact that our business activities have in the region, but looking to ways we can give back to the local community.”
Cape Jaffa’s 2010 additions to last year’s award-winning sustainable initiatives include achieving biodynamic status of Cape Jaffa’s entire 121-hectare property, engaging local community groups to increase the size of its native woodlot and seed orchard, increasing its green fund contributions to a total value of $10000 and installing solar panels at the winery that feed excess accumulated power back into the grid.
“Being biodynamic for more than a decade has proven to us that you can build a strong and healthy vineyard through natural management. We are committed to extending this approach to how we manage our environment and resources to create a legacy for future generations to aspire to."
The much-coveted pear trophies handcrafted by the Jam Factory Adelaide are now viewable at Cape Jaffa’s cellar door.
