Riptide Red Blend
Style: Aromatic and elegant.
The inspiration: I was inspired by my travels to do something totally bizarre so blended white viognier juice with red Shiraz skins prior to fermentation.
This is a slightly lighter style of red that’s unique from anything we’re used to seeing here - or anywhere in the world really. Viognier has so much going for it in texture that it’s often compared to a red wine. The aim was to capture the amazing aromatics of this white variety and the colour and intensity of a red. The resulting wine has very soft tannins and an aroma that is both intriguing and delicious. Try to guess the variety (purposely not disclosed on the label) and it’s likely to bring the odd wine buff off their pedestal.
Cellaring: This wine is drinking well now while the aromatics are most apparent however it will evolve into a more tertiary and complex style in the bottle over the next five years.
Food pairing: Be bold and serve this with big flavours like chilli crab or roast pork with apple and rosemary. Try it slightly chilled when the weather warms for a more refreshing drink.
